Swinton data revealed a 24% increase in the number of home insurance claims during the last half term break in February.
Broken windows are one of the most common causes for insurance claims with would-be Andy Murrays and Wayne Rooneys being blamed for the rise compared with other times during the year.
And with the forecast for the half term holiday looking typically unpredictable, the likelihood of damage is even greater with children cooped up indoors. Accidental damage to carpets, sofas and electronic equipment top the list of claims during school holidays.
Claims for garden theft is also higher at this time of year, with expensive bikes going missing and power tools and play equipment being removed from garden sheds.
Steve Chelton, Insurer development manager at Swinton said: “School holidays dramatically increase the risk of an accident in the home and we would urge parents to check their home insurance policy to ensure they are covered.
Standard policies generally provide cover for accidental damage to electrical equipment e.g TV’s, hi fis and computers, however for parents with small children, it is worth considering increasing the amount of accidental damage you have to cover events such as accidents with paint and spillages on carpets.”.
